Important Vehicle Specific Notes and Recommendations

Chevy and GMC 2500 and 3500 series trucks feature IFS front suspensions with torsion bar springs and heavy duty rear leaf springs. This configuration provides excellent towing and hauling capabilities, however, the front end is very particular to its ride height and the heavy springs produce a lot of "kick-back" so shock tuning and setup are critical for the best results. A few important setup notes for these trucks are listed below:

1. These trucks sit low from the factory for gas mileage reasons and many arrive with the lower control arms already touching the bump stops so lifting the front end is desperately needed to improve ride quality. Front ride height is very easy to adjust by turning the torsion bar keys under the truck and it is common for people to over-crank the torsion bars for too much lift causing poor performance. Filthy Motorsports highly recommends using a proper leveling kit with torsion keys and aftermarket UCAs to achieve 1.5" to 2.5" of lift over average stock height.

2. The factory upper control arms act as limiting straps and this feature isn't always retained with aftermarket upper control arms. While these King shocks are able to serve as limiting straps for typical use, we recommend adding external limit straps for aggressive off-road use.

3. The factory torsion keys and upper control arms on GM HD trucks significantly limit suspension travel. Aftermarket torsion keys will allow for an additional 3/4" of tire travel when paired with extended travel (EXT) front shocks. When aftermarket torsion keys are paired with aftermarket upper control arms, an additional 3/4" of suspension travel is available when paired with EXT2 length front shocks for a total of 1.5" more travel.

4. Avoid adding heavy weight to the front end, especially on diesel engine trucks. The front suspension on GM HD trucks works much harder than Ford and Ram trucks with solid axles as the shocks are leverage 2:1 and the torsion springs are leveraged 5:1 on the lower control arms. Adding a 200lb. bumper and/or winch combination up front is the most that we recommend for good performance.

5. Keeping weight in the bed is an easy way to improve ride quality on full-size trucks. The factory springs require about 400-600lbs in the bed to reach their "sweet spot" and they will ride significantly harsher when unloaded. While King rear shocks will help significantly to control the springs, adding a fuel transfer tank or tool box in the bed will improve ride quality further. If towing and hauling is not a significant portion of how the truck is used, Filthy Motorsports highly recommend softer rear leaf springs.

6. Tires and tire pressure are a big factor to ride quality on full-size trucks. Because the springs and shocks are dedicated to dampening and controlling the movement of a 6,000-7,000lb truck, they can't do much for small bumps in the road like cracks or small rocks. These small imperfections are the responsibility of the tires and the more sidewall a tire has (larger tire on a smaller wheel) and the better it flexes, the better it will absorb these bumps. We recommend learning more about tire pressures and how maximum tire pressures are not needed when the truck is not towing or hauling.

The shocks are dead-on correct. I took a test drive over some roads around here that have a wide range of conditions and you were right...it’s a night and day difference. (2020 GMC Denali 2500 HD)

5 of 5 Very Impressed September 21, 2020
Reviewer: Don from Fort Myers, FL
I had the King shocks installed today and thus far I am very impressed with them. I will be adding the truck camper by the end of the week and will go out on the road and search for some dips and bumps, that will be the real test. Thanks for your help.

5 of 5 Big improvement! May 8, 2018
Reviewer: Casey from Newbury park, CA
The shocks are on the truck and everything is perfect, thank you for all the help and getting the instructions sent to me. The truck rides so much better, it's more firm but almost sport car feel to them. but you also have no bounce after hitting big dips on the freeway.

5 of 5 Awesome Shocks and Service! March 27, 2018
Reviewer: Mike from Goldsboro, NC
Purchased front and rear kings for my 2017 Chevy 2500HD. Awesome communication from all the guys/gals there. Top notch service! These Kings are badass too...should have zero suspension issues when getting back to hunting locations out west in the fall. Keep up the awesome service!
